Movie Review – Astro Boy

There’s a considerable amount of unexpected drama in the first act of Astro Boy. I suppose in retrospect, Example A is compatible with the story. But the second surprise really is one of those things you don’t see coming. If the rest of the film was up to that standard, then we’d have something …

I know where the wild things are, and apparently so do many of you as the Spike Jonze-directed “Where The Wild Things Are” captured the box office crown on its opening day yesterday. The monster-filled epic, which features the voices of James Gandolfini and Forest Whitaker, earned $12 million on Friday much to the surprise of box office analysts. Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that the film was expected to make only $30 million at best this weekend, but the excellent Friday night performance could lead the picture straight past $38 million …

Early this morning, a rumor hit the Internets concerning Vin Diesel and one of his upcoming gigs. Citing a “trusted source,” website CineFOOLS reported that “Vin Diesel has dropped out of ‘xXx 3.’” No reason accompanied the news, though the writer speculated that it might have something to do with director Rob Cohen’s departure from the franchise. Diesel of course launched the franchise in 2002, though the 2005 sequel centered on a new hero, played by Ice Cube.

Seeing as how the title of the film specifically references Diesel’s character, his departure would likely spell some pretty significant changes for the coming sequel. Fortunately, it turns out that the rumor is untrue: Vin Diesel is still on board to star in “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage,” which currently has a tentative 2011 release listed …

Wasn’t “The Soloist” hilarious? Remember all those crazy scenes of Robert Downey Jr. spilling urine on himself, and Jamie Foxx acting like he might be insane? Ah, good times, good times.

Oh wait, “Soloist” was a drama? Well, now that you mention it, maybe I shouldn’t have been laughing so much. Either way, the good news is that Foxx and Downey Jr. are reuniting for a real comedy from the director of “The Hangover.” And this time, I’m pretty sure it’ll be okay to laugh …

Given recent comments from Sir Ian McKellen about his involvement (or lack thereof) in the upcoming “X-Men Origins: Magneto” film from Fox, it’s time to face the inevitable—Magneto is going to be recast. This was already a virtual certainty due to the story’s purported focus on the Master of Magnetism’s more youthful days, but McKellen’s words confirm the need for a new, younger actor.

Recasting Magneto is difficult for a number of reasons. For one, McKellen already played him so expertly that an actor of his quality is absolutely essential—and not only that, but it’d be a good idea to find someone who looks like they could age into McKellen’s likeness, which is very tricky. For that reason, I think it’s more important to focus on finding an excellent, fitting actor for the role, rather than selecting an actor based on his likeness to McKellen …

I’m fine watching Ian Somerhalder on the small screen, though I’ve missed him on “Lost” the past couple years and I’m pretty tired of vampire shows (such as his series “The Vampire Diaries”). But I just re-watched the terribly underrated “The Rules of Attraction” the other night and I really think he belongs on the big screen more often. Fortunately, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Somerhalder has been cast in a new film titled “Cradlewood.”

Described as a romantic gothic fairy tale, “Cradlewood” follows a man (Somerhalder) threatened by a family curse. Thanks to an old deal with a demon, every male in his family dies as soon as he begets a son. In the movie, which was conceived and will be directed by visual effects artist Harry Weinmann (”Race to Witch Mountain”), Somerhalder’s character suspects that his wife is pregnant and he resolves to do what he can to stay alive …
